The journey began in Arusha, a city of 200,000 who were mostly poor |

Getting There
There was no public transporation and most people could not afford cars-- so they walked |

Olduvai Gorge
In Arusha is a small museum with skulls of human ancestors dating back 1.6 million years, thanks to nearby Olduvai Gorge, one of the most famous archeological sites in the world. |

Tropical Forest
At a latitude of 2 degrees south the forests in Tanzania were humid (and thick) |

Second Dawn
The morning of our second day we awoke to out first clear view of Kilimanjaro |

With Kilimanjaro smoking in the background we made our final camp at just over 15,000 feet. |

Getting Ready

Unlike the Everest region, there were no accomodations for climbers on the way up. It took a team of 10 guides, cooks, and porters to get us up Kilimanjaro. |

We started the summit assault at midnight and arrived before dawn. |
