African Adventure

In July,2007 the family went to Africa. I wanted to climb Kilimanjaro and the boys decided they wanted to climb with me.  Renee and Heather wanted the adventure without the mountain and made it a family excursion.

Arusha, Tanzania

The journey began in Arusha, a city of 200,000 who were mostly poor

Getting There

There was no public transporation and most people could not afford cars-- so they walked

Olduvai Gorge

In Arusha is a small museum with skulls of human ancestors dating back 1.6 million years, thanks to nearby Olduvai Gorge, one of the most famous archeological sites in the world.

Tropical Forest

At a latitude of 2 degrees south the forests in Tanzania were humid (and thick)

Second Dawn

The morning of our second day we awoke to out first clear view of Kilimanjaro

Steep Slopes

Some of the slopes up Kilimanjaro were fairly steep

Getting Closer

Kili looked more formidable the closer we came

High Camp at 15,000 feet.

With Kilimanjaro smoking in the background we made our final camp at just over 15,000 feet.

Getting Ready

The boys were pumped up for the summit assault

(Most of) the Team

Unlike the Everest region, there were no accomodations for climbers on the way up. It took a team of 10 guides, cooks, and porters to get us up Kilimanjaro.

Summit: 19,350 feet.

We started the summit assault at midnight and arrived before dawn.
