Everest Region: Page 3

The mountains were as beautiful as I thought they would be.  The hike was somewhat easier.  The trek to Everest was expected to take ten days.  We made it in seven.

Ama Dablam (22,453 ft)

Although not one of the tallest Himalayan peaks, it is clearly one of the most intimidating. The words "Ama Dablam" mean, "Mother with a baby in her lap".

In memory

At Thokla Pass (15,818 ft), Himalayan peaks give tribute to fallen climbers in an area marked with tombstones.

Nuptse (25,804 ft) and the village of Lobuche (16,080 ft).

Pumo Ri (23,465 ft) towering over Kala Patthar (18,400 ft).

The words Kala Patthar are Hindu meaning "black rock".

Approaching Gorak Shep (16,833 ft.), the highest village in the world.

From left to right : Lingtren (22,102 ft), Khumbutse (21,828 ft) and Lho La (19,735 ft).

Top of the World

From the summit of Kala Patthar, Everest (29,023 ft) is the black mountain in the middle. On the right is Lhotse (27,555 ft).

Desolation of the Earth

The trek to Everest Base Camp made me think about what Tolkien had in mind when he envisioned Mordor.
